The main duties of the police are to maintain law and order, prevent and investigate crimes, and protect the lives and property of citizens. This includes responsibilities such as arresting criminals, following instructions for investigations, maintaining public peace, providing assistance in emergencies, and protecting vulnerable sections of society.

However, instead of protecting society by raiding illegal liquor dens, illegal betting dens, and illegal gambling dens, it is observed that the police are protecting the illegal business operators themselves.

The main duties of the police include preventing crime, maintaining peace, maintaining public order, investigating crimes when they occur, collecting evidence, arresting suspects, protecting citizens, and protecting the lives, property, and rights of citizens.

Similarly, providing assistance during natural disasters or other emergencies, collecting information related to criminal activities, and respecting the constitution and laws are also responsibilities of the police.

If possible, explaining and advising people, working with the help of the public, showing empathy towards vulnerable sections of society, and obeying the orders of senior officers (if legal) are also part of their duties. The police are the protectors of society and work to keep society safe by upholding the law.

They are responsible for maintaining public order and safety, enforcing the law, and preventing, detecting, and investigating criminal activities. These functions are known as policing. A police officer is an employee of the state government and is entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining law and order and protecting property. They also have the authority to use force when necessary. The public feels safe because of the police.

The primary duty of the police is to prevent crime and disorder, and the police must recognize that the test of their efficiency is the absence of both, and the absence of visible evidence of police action in dealing with them.

The Maharashtra Right to Public Services Act, 2015 was enacted to ensure that citizens are provided with notified services in a transparent, quick, and time-bound manner by various government departments and public authorities under the government, and it has been in force since 28.04.2015.

The Maharashtra Police Act, 1951 is an important legal framework that governs the structure, powers, duties, and procedures of the police force in Maharashtra, granting the police force the necessary powers to maintain law and order, prevent crime, and protect citizens.

It includes matters such as the structure of the police force, the enforcement of duties, and the control of public entertainment. This Act was created to replace the earlier Bombay Police Act and to make the police system cohesive and effective according to the needs of the independent state of Maharashtra.

Ensuring public peace, order, and safety. Crime prevention and investigation: Preventing crimes before they occur and investigating them after they happen. Protecting the rights of citizens.

Along with this, it is essential to protect the rights and freedoms of citizens while exercising police powers.

A vigilant and efficient police force means creating a well-organized and efficient police force. Section 64: This section outlines the duties of the police, including serving summonses, executing warrants, enforcing legal orders, and collecting information regarding crimes. It also includes removing individuals dangerous to society from specific areas.

Historical Background….

After independence and the reorganization of states, there was a need for a separate and comprehensive law for Maharashtra. The Bombay Police Act, 1951, which was applicable in the Bombay Presidency, was modified to suit the needs of the independent state of Maharashtra and implemented as the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951.

This Act is the backbone of police administration in Maharashtra and empowers the police to effectively perform their duties, while also protecting the rights of citizens.

Therefore, to protect the citizens, the Maharashtra Police should shut down illegal liquor dens, illegal betting dens, and illegal gambling dens in the state of Maharashtra by conducting special campaigns.
