Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, but Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule are the real beneficiaries of this day due to their invaluable contribution to the field of education.

Because Savitribai Phule started the country’s first school for girls in Bhidewada on January 1, 1848 and became the first woman teacher in India.

She devoted her entire life to bringing women into the stream of education and fought against social inequality.

The social work and educational contribution of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule has been invaluable for the empowerment and progress of women and men in India.

Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule started the first school for girls in Pune, which earned her recognition as the first woman teacher in India.

During the caste system, educating girls was against the society. She challenged this practice and fought against many discriminatory practices prevalent in the society.

On 1 January 1848, she established a girls’ school in Bhidewada, Pune, along with Mahatma Phule. Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule was not only a teacher, but also a social reformer. She worked for women’s education and empowerment. Due to this, she is considered the mother of Indian feminism.

She carried stones and dung on her body to teach girls, but still she continued her work.

Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule together brought the untouchables and the downtrodden into the stream of education in the country and devoted their entire lives to this work.

Although Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, considering the great contribution made by Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule in the field of education, they are considered the real originators of this day.

The true significance of Teachers’ Day is the change and empowerment that education brings to women’s lives.
